Pause-at-the-Top Tempo Drill
Cure a rushed, over-the-top transition by inserting a deliberate pause at the top of the backswing, letting the swing sequence from the ground up. A smooth transition is the hidden engine of consistent ball-striking and added effortless distance.
Setup
Any club works; a mid-iron is ideal. No equipment needed — this is a feel drill you can do on the range or even at home with slow practice swings into open space.
Step by step
- Make your normal backswing all the way to the top, then consciously pause for a full second — feel the club stop and settle.
- From the pause, start the downswing by letting your weight shift toward your lead foot and your hips begin to rotate, before your hands and arms move.
- Feel the club 'drop' into the slot as your lower body leads, then swing through to a balanced finish.
- Exaggerate the pause at first — a real, complete stop — then shorten it over time into a smooth, unhurried transition.
- Alternate one paused swing, then one normal-tempo swing trying to keep the same unrushed sequence.
Reps / time
10 paused swings, then 10 normal swings keeping the feel. About 10 minutes.
Coaching cue
Common mistake: starting the downswing with the shoulders and arms (coming 'over the top'), which causes slices and pulls. Instead, let the pause give your lower body time to start first — the sequence is feet, hips, torso, then arms and club. Smooth wins; you can't be quick from the top and consistent at the same time.
