Pace of Play — How Fast to Play
4 hours for 18 holes. Be ready when it's your turn. Keep moving.
Do
- Target: 18 holes in 4 hours (foursome), 3.5 hours (twosome)
- Be ready to hit when it's your turn — club selection, distance, line should be noted before you approach the ball
- Limit practice swings to 1 (max 2) per shot
- Walk briskly between shots
- On the green, mark your ball promptly, read while others putt, leave when done
Don't
- Don't stand over the ball for 30+ seconds analyzing every detail
- Don't linger on the green recording scores — move off and mark cards between holes
- Don't take multiple practice swings before each shot
Beginner-safe script
“If asked to speed up: 'You're right, thanks for the heads up — we'll pick it up.'”
Why it matters
Slow play backs up the entire course and causes frustration for everyone. It's the #1 etiquette complaint in golf.
