Picking Up Your Ball to Maintain Pace
Once you hit double par (or your agreed max), pick it up and move on.
Do
- In casual play: pick up once you've reached double par (max score) on a hole
- Beginner rule of thumb: max 8 on a par-4, 9 on a par-5, 6 on a par-3
- Pick up promptly and move to help with pace
- Mark an 'X' or the max score on your card if not keeping exact score
Don't
- Don't refuse to pick up and make everyone watch you take 10+ shots on a hole
- Don't pick up before reaching the green in official or handicap rounds
Beginner-safe script
“I'll pick up here — I've already reached my max. Thanks for the patience.”
Why it matters
Picking up is the right call for beginners in casual rounds. It keeps pace, reduces frustration, and is standard practice.
