Playing with Strangers — Small Talk Tips
Be friendly, compliment good shots, don't give swing tips.
Do
- Introduce yourself, ask their name and use it
- Ask where they usually play, how long they've been playing
- Compliment a good shot genuinely
- Keep the conversation light — weather, course conditions, recent golf
- Match the social energy of the group — some people are quiet, others chatty
Don't
- Don't talk about money, religion, politics
- Don't give unsolicited swing tips to strangers
- Don't be on your phone the whole round
Beginner-safe script
“Great shot! So where do you usually play? I'm still learning the game myself.”
Why it matters
Golf is often a networking and social sport. Good conversations make rounds more enjoyable for everyone.
