Warming Up on the Putting Green

Roll 5–10 putts on the practice green, get a feel for speed, then head to tee.

Do

  • Hit a few long lag putts (20–30 feet) to feel the speed of the greens
  • Practice a few 5–8 foot putts to build confidence
  • Be aware of other players — don't putt through their lines
  • Leave in time to be at the first tee 2–3 minutes early

Don't

  • Don't hog a spot or practice hole for too long during busy times
  • Don't use the putting green to chip — many courses prohibit chipping on the practice green

“No script needed.”

Why it matters

Green speed varies dramatically by course and season. A few putts tells you if greens are fast or slow today.
