Repairing Pitch Marks (Ball Marks) on the Green

Find your ball mark, fix it, fix one more nearby. Always.

Do

  • Find your ball mark on the green as soon as you arrive
  • Insert the divot repair tool at the back and sides of the mark, pushing inward (not prying up)
  • Smooth the mark with your putter sole
  • Repair any other old marks you see nearby — it only takes 10 seconds each

Don't

  • Don't pry the center of the mark upward — this tears roots
  • Don't ignore your ball mark because you're focused on putting
  • Don't repair your mark while someone else is putting — wait until they've putted

Beginner-safe script

“I'll fix my mark here — let me get yours too. [Repairs nearby marks.]”

Why it matters

Every unrepaired pitch mark hardens and creates bumps that affect every future putt on that green.
