Tending the Flag vs. Leaving It In
Ask if they want it in or tended. Tend it properly if asked.
Do
- Under current rules, you may putt with the flag in — no penalty
- If putting from off the green (long chip), having the flag in helps you aim
- Tend the flag when asked: hold the pole, remove it AFTER the ball is rolling
- If you're holding the flag, step to the side so your shadow doesn't cross the hole
Don't
- Don't remove the flag mid-roll after someone has decided to putt with it in
- Don't lean on the flag — it can damage the cup
- Don't leave the flag lying on the green surface (it can leave marks)
Beginner-safe script
“Want me to tend the flag or leave it in?”
Why it matters
Flag-in putting is the new normal under 2019 rules. It speeds up play and can even help on longer putts.
