Taking an Unplayable Lie
Any lie is unplayable if you say so (except in a penalty area). +1 stroke, 3 drop options.
Do
- You can declare any ball unplayable (except in a penalty area) at any time — your call
- Three options: (1) Stroke-and-distance — replay from previous spot (+1 stroke); (2) Drop within 2 club-lengths, no closer to hole (+1 stroke); (3) Drop behind the ball on a line to the hole, as far back as you want (+1 stroke)
Don't
- Don't move the ball first, then decide on unplayable — decide before touching
- Don't try to take an unplayable in a penalty area — you must use penalty area relief options
Beginner-safe script
“I'm going to take an unplayable lie here. [Choose relief option, take drop, add 1 stroke.]”
Why it matters
The unplayable is a free choice that protects you from dangerous or impossible lie attempts. Use it freely.
