3-Wood Off the Fairway Deck
Long second shots on par-5s, recovery approaches from good fairway lies over 160 yards.
Grip
Grip down ½ inch from the top of the handle for better control on fairway shots.
Stance
Shoulder-width apart. Slightly narrower than with the driver.
Ball position
Just inside left heel — one ball back from driver position.
Posture
Stand tall with slight hip hinge. Arms hang naturally below shoulders.
Swing thought
Sweep the ball, don't dig at it. Level or slightly descending strike through the ball.
Contact goal
Ball first contact — you should take a shallow divot after the ball with a fairway wood.
Common mistake
Trying to scoop the ball into the air by lifting the club through impact. Trust the club's loft.
One-minute drill
Set up on the grass without a ball. Make 5 slow practice swings and focus on brushing the grass cleanly at the lowest point of the swing.
This is a beginner refresher, not professional instruction — see a PGA pro for swing changes.
