Grip Pressure and Tension
Every shot. One of the most important fundamentals in golf.
Grip
Grip pressure: imagine holding a tube of toothpaste without squeezing any out. Rate 4–5 on a scale of 1–10. Consistent throughout the swing — don't grip tighter at the top or through impact.
Stance
N/A — grip applies to all shots.
Ball position
N/A.
Posture
Soft arms = soft grip. Tension in the grip travels up the arms and into the shoulders, ruining the swing.
Swing thought
Light, light, light. The club is not going anywhere. A light grip enables clubhead speed — a tight grip kills it.
Contact goal
Consistent, on-center contact enabled by tension-free arms and hands.
Common mistake
Gripping tighter when trying to hit harder. This is the opposite of what you should do — it creates tension and decreases clubhead speed.
One-minute drill
Hold your 7-iron and squeeze it as hard as possible. Feel the tension in your arms and shoulders. Now release to 40% pressure. Feel the difference. That's how you should hold it.
