Lag Putt (Long Putt Distance Control)
Any putt longer than about 10 feet. Lag mode: distance first, line second.
Grip
Many options: conventional, cross-handed, or claw. Choose what feels most natural. Keep pressure light and consistent.
Stance
Comfortable, feet shoulder-width. Still and balanced.
Ball position
Just inside left heel (forward of center) for most putters.
Posture
Eyes directly over the ball or slightly inside the ball-to-target line. Spine straight, slight forward lean.
Swing thought
Pendulum motion — shoulder-driven, not hands/wrists. Match backswing and follow-through length for consistent pace.
Contact goal
Center of the putter face, rolling smoothly. Primary goal: leave the ball within a 3-foot radius of the hole.
Common mistake
Wrist-y stroke on long putts — results in unpredictable distance. Also: aiming at the hole instead of reading the break.
One-minute drill
From 30 feet, hit 5 putts. Goal is to have all 5 stop inside a 3-foot circle. Don't care about making them — only pace.
This is a beginner refresher, not professional instruction — see a PGA pro for swing changes.
