Mid-Iron (7-Iron)
Approach shots from about 80–140 yards, depending on your swing speed. Also the best learning/practice club.
Grip
The 7-iron is a great club to dial in your grip. Light pressure. Left hand controls the face (for right-handers).
Stance
Shoulder-width apart. Feet slightly flared.
Ball position
Center of stance. The most common beginner error is playing the ball too far forward.
Posture
Hip hinge, slight knee flex. Arms hanging below shoulders. Chin up. Keep the flex throughout the swing.
Swing thought
Hit down and through. Trust the loft — the club lifts the ball, you don't.
Contact goal
Ball first, then turf. You should take a small divot in front of where the ball was sitting.
Common mistake
Trying to help the ball up by scooping at impact (early wrist release). Hit down — the loft does the rest.
One-minute drill
Place a tee in the ground 4 inches in front of the ball. Try to knock out the tee as you swing through — this trains forward divot.
This is a beginner refresher, not professional instruction — see a PGA pro for swing changes.
