Putting Grip Basics
Every single putt. Master the basics before worrying about technique upgrades.
Grip
Three common options: (1) Conventional — both thumbs down the flat of the grip; (2) Cross-handed (left low) — reverses normal hand position for more shoulder-driven stroke; (3) Claw — lead hand conventional, trail hand in a claw/crab position. Try all three. The most important thing is keeping pressure consistent throughout the stroke.
Stance
Feet shoulder-width or slightly narrower. Square or slightly open.
Ball position
Just inside left heel (forward of center). Eyes directly over the ball.
Posture
Arms hang naturally. Slight bend from hips. Eyes over the ball or just inside the target line.
Swing thought
Pendulum. Shoulders rock the putter back and through. Wrists stay quiet and passive.
Contact goal
Center of putter face (sweet spot). Clean, smooth roll with no bounce.
Common mistake
Gripping too tightly and using the hands/wrists to drive the stroke. Shoulders power the putt — hands just hold on.
One-minute drill
Hold putter with very light grip (3/10 pressure). Make 10 putts. Notice how much smoother the stroke feels.
