Short Iron (9-Iron / Pitching Wedge)
Approach shots from about 55–115 yards, depending on your swing speed. Also basic chip shots.
Grip
Firm but relaxed. Short irons demand precision — not power. Keep your wrists neutral.
Stance
Slightly narrower than shoulder-width. This promotes a steeper swing for clean contact.
Ball position
Center of stance or just behind center.
Posture
More upright. Shorter club = stand slightly closer to the ball.
Swing thought
Smooth, controlled full swing. These clubs don't need power — accuracy and clean contact beat distance.
Contact goal
Crisp ball-first contact with a small, forward divot.
Common mistake
Deceleration on short irons — afraid of hitting too far, so you slow down. This leads to fat or thin shots. Make a full, committed swing.
One-minute drill
Hit 5 PW shots with a ¾ swing, focus only on clean contact. If all 5 feel crisp, build to full swings.
