Provisional Ball
Rules
Explained Simply
A second ball hit from the same spot when you think your first ball might be lost or out of bounds. Saves time — you don't have to walk back if the original is indeed lost.
Example
“Your drive might be OB. Before searching, announce: 'I'm playing a provisional.' Hit another ball. Walk up, search — if original is OB, play the provisional.”
Why it matters
Prevents slow play. Always hit a provisional if there's any doubt. If you find the original in-bounds and in-play, play it (the provisional is abandoned).
Common beginner mistake
Not announcing it as a provisional before hitting. If you just 'hit another' without announcing it, the original is considered abandoned.
