Shotgun Start
Game Formats
Explained Simply
A format, common in tournaments and outings, where every group tees off at the same time from a different hole — so all groups start and finish together.
Example
“At a charity scramble your group is assigned to start on hole 7. A horn sounds and every group tees off from their assigned hole at once.”
Why it matters
If you play a charity event or outing, you'll likely see a shotgun start. Knowing your starting hole and the signal keeps you from being late.
Common beginner mistake
Heading to the first tee out of habit. In a shotgun start, go to your assigned starting hole instead.
