A complete miss — swinging and missing the ball entirely. Under the rules, this counts as a stroke.
Example
“You swing at a tee shot and miss the ball. That counts as 1. Tee it up and try again (now hitting 2).”
Why it matters
Yes, a whiff counts. Don't let embarrassment lead you to ignore it. Everyone whiffs occasionally, especially early on.
Common beginner mistake
Not counting a whiff as a stroke in casual play. It always counts.
