Build a Pre-Shot Routine

A repeatable routine makes your setup consistent and calms your nerves. The same steps every time turn good fundamentals into automatic habits.

A repeatable routine makes your setup consistent and calms your nerves: pick the target line from behind the ball, set the clubface first to an intermediate target, then build your stance to it — every shot, every time.

Step by step

  1. Stand behind the ball and pick your target and intermediate target.
  2. Take one rehearsal swing or visualize the shot you want to hit.
  3. Walk in from behind, set the clubface to your intermediate target, then set your feet.
  4. Take your grip, settle your weight, take one breath, and swing without delay.

Check yourself

  • Your routine takes the same 20–30 seconds whether you're calm or nervous.
  • You commit to the shot before you start — no second-guessing over the ball.
  • You do the full routine for every shot, including chips and putts.

Common mistakes

  • Abandoning the routine when you're rushed or rattled — exactly when you need it most.
  • Standing over the ball too long, which builds tension and doubt.
  • Changing the target or club mid-routine.
