Drop
Rules
Explained Simply
The official way to put a new ball into play after a penalty or when taking relief. You hold the ball at knee height and let it fall straight down.
Example
“After hitting into a red-staked penalty area, stand at your relief spot, hold ball at knee height, drop it so it falls and lands in the relief area.”
Why it matters
Dropping incorrectly (e.g., too high, from shoulder height) was changed in the 2019 rules update. Knee height is now the standard — simpler and more consistent.
Common beginner mistake
Dropping from the wrong height (shoulder height is the old rule). Use knee height under current USGA rules.
