Free Relief
Rules
Explained Simply
Taking a drop without a penalty stroke — allowed when your ball is in or near certain conditions like casual water, ground under repair, or a cart path.
Example
“Your ball lands on a paved cart path. You get free relief — find the nearest point that avoids the cart path, drop within one club-length.”
Why it matters
Knowing your free relief rights saves you unnecessary penalties. Many beginners take penalties when they don't need to.
Common beginner mistake
Not claiming free relief when it's available. Always check — cart paths, ground under repair (GUR), and casual water all allow free drops.
