Stroke Play
Game Formats
Explained Simply
The most common format — every stroke counts for the entire round. Lowest total score wins.
Example
“You finish 18 holes in 95 strokes, your friend finishes in 88. Your friend wins.”
Why it matters
Stroke play is the standard format for most recreational rounds, many junior tournaments, and a lot of high-school qualifying. Every stroke counts — see the [Junior Golf hub](/junior-golf) if you are preparing a first scored event.
Common beginner mistake
Giving up on a hole mentally — every stroke counts, so fight for every putt even late in the round.
