Handicap
Scoring
Explained Simply
A number that represents your skill level, allowing golfers of different abilities to compete fairly. Lower handicap = better golfer.
Example
“A 20-handicapper gets 20 extra strokes subtracted from their gross score to get their net score.”
Why it matters
Makes the game fair for everyone. You don't need a handicap to play — you only need one if you want to post official scores or compete in handicap events.
Common beginner mistake
Feeling pressured to get an official handicap right away. Just play and enjoy the game first.
