Thin / Skull
Shot Types
Explained Simply
When you hit the ball with the leading edge of the club (too high on the ball), causing it to fly low and run past the target.
Example
“You chip toward the green and the ball rockets low, shooting well past the pin onto the back fringe — that's a thin shot.”
Why it matters
Thin shots on chips near the green can lead to big numbers. Usually caused by lifting up through impact.
Common beginner mistake
Looking up too early to see where the ball is going — the head lift causes the thin contact.

- Chunk / Fat ShotWhen you hit the ground significantly before the ball, taking a large divot and losing distance. The ball usually goes about half as far as intended.
- Bump and RunA low chip that carries a short distance onto the green, then rolls the rest of the way to the hole like a putt — the simplest, most reliable shot from just off the green.
