Chunk / Fat Shot

Shot Types

Explained Simply

When you hit the ground significantly before the ball, taking a large divot and losing distance. The ball usually goes about half as far as intended.

Example

“You swing a 7-iron and the club digs into the dirt 3 inches behind the ball — it only rolls 60 yards. That's a chunk.”

Why it matters

Extremely common for beginners. Usually caused by early release of the hands or swaying back. Small fix = massive improvement.

Common beginner mistake

Trying to 'scoop' the ball up in the air — trust the loft of the club and hit down through the ball.
