Up and Down
Common Phrases
Explained Simply
Getting the ball into the hole in just two shots from off the green — one shot (a chip or pitch) to get it close, then one putt to hole it.
Example
“You miss the green, chip to 3 feet, and sink the putt. That's an 'up and down' — you saved your score.”
Why it matters
A reliable short game is how good golfers turn missed greens into pars. Improving your up-and-down rate lowers scores faster than adding distance.
Common beginner mistake
Trying to hole the chip instead of leaving it close. Aim to get the ball inside a few feet so the putt is easy.
