Yips
Common Phrases
Explained Simply
An involuntary twitch or flinch — usually on short putts or chips — that makes a simple stroke break down under pressure. As much mental as physical.
Example
“A player who has made thousands of 3-footers suddenly jabs at them nervously and misses. That's the yips.”
Why it matters
Knowing the term helps you recognize that even good players battle it. For most beginners, short-game misses are mechanics or nerves, not true yips.
Common beginner mistake
Labeling normal beginner misses as 'the yips.' Build a repeatable routine and steady tempo before worrying about it.

- Lag PuttA long putt where your primary goal is to leave the ball close to the hole (within 2–3 feet) rather than trying to hole it.
- Three-PuttTaking three putts to hole the ball on one green. Adds a stroke to your score and is one of the biggest score-wreckers.
- TempoThe rhythm and pace of your swing from start to finish. A smooth, consistent tempo is more important than raw speed.
