From the Fairway
From a good lie, your job is clean, ball-first contact. With irons you hit down and through; the loft of the club lifts the ball, so you don't have to.

Step by step
- Pick the club for the distance and commit to it — most amateurs come up short, so take enough club.
- Play the ball roughly center of your stance for mid-irons.
- Make your normal swing and feel like you're hitting down and through the ball.
- Trust the loft to get the ball airborne; your divot should start at or just past the ball.
Check yourself
- You take a shallow divot in front of where the ball was — proof you hit ball first.
- Your weight moves onto your lead foot through impact.
- You committed fully to the club and target instead of steering the shot.
Common mistakes
- Trying to scoop or lift the ball into the air, causing thin or fat shots.
- Under-clubbing and swinging harder to make up the distance.
- Decelerating into the ball out of fear of hitting it too far.
