Punch Shot (Knockdown)
Shot Types
Explained Simply
A low, controlled shot hit with a shorter swing and the ball back in your stance, so it flies under the wind or out from under tree branches.
Example
“You're behind a low branch in the trees. You take a 6-iron, play the ball back, make a short follow-through, and punch it low back into the fairway.”
Why it matters
A low punch is your friend in wind and trouble. Keeping the ball under the wind makes it far more predictable than a normal high shot.
Common beginner mistake
Trying to scoop the ball up out of trouble. Hit down on it with a shorter finish to keep it low and under the branches.

- Bump and RunA low chip that carries a short distance onto the green, then rolls the rest of the way to the hole like a putt — the simplest, most reliable shot from just off the green.
- LoftThe angle of the clubface relative to vertical. Higher loft = higher, shorter shots. Lower loft = lower, longer shots.
- StanceHow you position your feet relative to the ball and your target line. Width, direction, and ball position all form your stance.
- Carry DistanceHow far the ball travels through the air before it first hits the ground. Does not include rollout after landing.
