Rollout
Shot Types
Explained Simply
The distance the ball rolls along the ground after it lands.
Example
“A low punch shot might carry 100y and roll 30y for 130y total. A high wedge carries 80y and rolls 5y total.”
Why it matters
High-lofted shots land soft with little rollout. Low shots run out more. Factor in rollout when clubs near hazards or tight pins.
Common beginner mistake
Not accounting for rollout near the green — a lot of beginners hit past pins they intended to stop at.

- Total DistanceCarry + rollout combined. The full distance the ball travels from the point of contact.
- Bump and RunA low chip that carries a short distance onto the green, then rolls the rest of the way to the hole like a putt — the simplest, most reliable shot from just off the green.
