Total Distance
Equipment
Explained Simply
Carry + rollout combined. The full distance the ball travels from the point of contact.
Example
“Driver: 180y carry + 30y roll = 210y total distance.”
Why it matters
Most GPS apps show total distance to the hole. Know both your carry and total to pick the right club.
Common beginner mistake
Confusing carry with total. Always check what your GPS or rangefinder is measuring.

- Carry DistanceHow far the ball travels through the air before it first hits the ground. Does not include rollout after landing.
- RolloutThe distance the ball rolls along the ground after it lands.
- Club UpTo use one club more than you'd normally reach for — going from a 9-iron to an 8-iron, for example — when the conditions (wind, elevation, firm greens) suggest you need extra distance.
