Scratch Golfer
Scoring
Explained Simply
A golfer with a 0 handicap who is expected to shoot at or near par on any standard course.
Example
“A scratch golfer at a par-72 course is expected to shoot around 72. Most recreational golfers carry handicaps of 10–30+.”
Why it matters
Course ratings and slope ratings are built around the scratch golfer as a baseline. It's a common reference point in golf conversation.
Common beginner mistake
Setting 'scratch' as an early goal. Focus on improvement milestones like breaking 100, then 90.
