GolfReady builds calm, beginner-first tools and guides for developing golfers and the families who walk with them.

Our verdict: start with an inexpensive, consistent ball and bring more than you expect to use. Twelve is a calm baseline for a first 18; pack a few more if losing balls would make you rush.

Why cheap balls are fine to start

Early misses are mostly about contact and direction, not small differences between premium covers. A ball you can replace without frustration is the better beginner ball.

How many to bring for 9 and 18 holes

For nine holes, six to twelve gives most first-timers breathing room. For 18, bring at least twelve; fifteen to twenty can make sense on a course with water or thick rough. These are packing suggestions, not performance statistics.

Soft vs. distance balls in plain English

A soft label usually describes feel and construction; a distance label emphasizes speed and flight. Neither fixes a slice. Choose one affordable model so putts and chips feel familiar.

Used and recycled balls

Clean used balls in good condition are fine for casual beginner play. Avoid badly scuffed, cut or cracked covers. Refinished balls have a renewed outer finish, so do not assume they are the same as simply cleaned used balls.

Lost-ball rules in one paragraph

Under the Rules of Golf, a ball not found within the search time is lost and stroke-and-distance relief normally applies. A provisional can save the walk back. Casual groups sometimes adopt a local procedure; agree before the round and use the official Rules for competition.

Common questions

How many golf balls should a beginner bring?

Bring at least twelve for a first 18 holes. Pack more if the course has heavy rough or water and running out would make the day stressful.

Are used golf balls good for beginners?

Yes. Clean used balls without cuts or deep scuffs are a sensible choice for casual beginner rounds.
