Our verdict: take a few lessons first if your swing changes from shot to shot. Then use a free walk-in fitting to learn your basic specs. Pay for a longer fitting when you can make several reasonably similar swings and are ready to compare equipment without guessing.

What a club fitting is

A fitter watches you hit balls and compares club length, lie, shaft, grip and head options. The goal is a useful specification, not a promise that new equipment will fix every miss.

Free fittings vs. paid fittings

A free walk-in option is a sensible first look. A paid session gives the fitter more time to compare combinations and explain the numbers. Ask whether the fee is tied to a purchase and whether you keep the results.

What happens during a fitting

Bring the clubs you already use. Warm up, hit a baseline, then compare one variable at a time. A good fitter explains which change helped and does not treat one perfect shot as the answer.

What you walk away with (the spec sheet)

Ask for the tested head, shaft model and flex, length, lie, loft and grip. Keep the sheet even if you buy nothing. Those details make future used-club shopping clearer.

When a beginner should get fitted, and when to wait

Wait if contact and speed vary wildly. Go now if standard clubs feel obviously too long or short, discomfort is involved, or you can repeat enough swings to compare options. A qualified coach or fitter can help you decide.

How to choose a fitter (big-box, independent, national, demo day)

Choose access to multiple suitable options, clear pricing and a written spec sheet. A demo day is useful for one brand; an independent fitter can compare more brands. Neither is automatically better for every golfer.

What to bring and what to ask

Bring your glove, golf shoes and current clubs. Ask what the fee includes, whether buying is optional, whether you receive the data, and which improvement came from fit rather than a single good swing.

Common questions

Should a beginner get fitted for golf clubs?

Usually not for a premium full-bag session right away. Take a few lessons, try a free walk-in fitting, and pay for more detail when your swing repeats.

How much does a golf club fitting cost?

The verified sessions in this guide run from $99.99 for a driver fitting at PGA TOUR Superstore STUDIO to $475 for a True Spec full bag with putter session.

Do I have to buy clubs after a fitting?

Ask before the session. A fitting and a purchase are separate decisions, although some promotions may depend on buying custom clubs.
