Form Tips
Beginner refreshers — not professional instruction
Driver
full swingSweep the ball off the tee. Low, wide takeaway. Let the club do the work — don't force it.
3-Wood Off the Fairway Deck
full swingSweep the ball, don't dig at it. Level or slightly descending strike through the ball.
Hybrid (3H, 4H, 5H)
full swingTreat it like a long iron — not a fairway wood. Swing through the ball with a slight downward strike.
Mid-Iron (7-Iron)
full swingHit down and through. Trust the loft — the club lifts the ball, you don't.
Short Iron (9-Iron / Pitching Wedge)
full swingSmooth, controlled full swing. These clubs don't need power — accuracy and clean contact beat distance.
Full Wedge Shot (Gap or Sand Wedge)
full swingAccelerate through — never decelerate on a wedge. Smooth, complete follow-through to high finish.
Half Wedge Shot (50–60 Yards)
partial swingLead arm to 9 o'clock (horizontal) on backswing, 3 o'clock on follow-through. Consistent arm-length swing = consistent distance.
Chip Shot — Bump and Run
short gamePendulum motion — shoulders rock, arms swing, wrists stay firm. Think: 'push, don't flip.'
Pitch Shot — Higher Trajectory
short gameHinge and hold. Wrists hinge on backswing, then drive through with body turn. Don't let the wrists flip.
Flop Shot (ADVANCED — Avoid for Beginners)
short gameSwing along the body line (left for right-handers), not at the target. Speed is essential — the open face and speed create the loft.
Greenside Bunker Shot
short gameSwing along your body line (not at the target). Splash the sand — the ball rides out on the sand explosion.
Fairway Bunker Shot
full swingPick the ball cleanly. The key difference vs. a greenside bunker: hit BALL FIRST (no sand before ball).
Lag Putt (Long Putt Distance Control)
puttingPendulum motion — shoulder-driven, not hands/wrists. Match backswing and follow-through length for consistent pace.
Short Putt (Inside 6 Feet)
puttingSee the line, set up to the line, commit, head stays still, listen for the sound of the ball dropping.
Uphill Lie
uneven liesSwing along the slope upward. Don't swing into the hill — let the club follow the ground angle.
Downhill Lie
uneven liesFollow the slope through impact. Your finish will be lower than normal — that's fine.
Ball Above Feet (Sidehill Lie)
uneven liesExpect the ball to pull/hook left (for right-handers). Aim right to compensate.
Ball Below Feet (Sidehill Lie)
uneven liesStay in your posture throughout the swing. Expect a fade/push right. Aim left to compensate.
Into Wind — Low Punch Shot
specialtyThree-quarter backswing. Accelerate through firmly. Low finish (hands below shoulder height). 'Trap it.'
Putting Grip Basics
puttingPendulum. Shoulders rock the putter back and through. Wrists stay quiet and passive.
Alignment Basics
full swingI am not aiming at the target — I am parallel to the target line. The target is to my left (right-hander), not directly in front of me.
Pre-Shot Routine
mentalStep 1: Stand behind the ball and identify target + intermediate target. Step 2: Approach from behind. Step 3: Set clubface first. Step 4: Set feet. Step 5: Check grip. Step 6: One deep breath. Step 7: Swing.
Grip Pressure and Tension
full swingLight, light, light. The club is not going anywhere. A light grip enables clubhead speed — a tight grip kills it.
Posture Basics — Every Full Swing
full swingAthletic posture: looks like a shortstop about to field a ground ball. Alert, balanced, loose.
Tempo and Rhythm
full swingMost tour players have a backswing-to-downswing ratio of approximately 3:1 (slow back, fast through). A common thought: '1-and-2' where '1' is the start of the backswing, 'and' is the top/transition, '2' is the downswing through impact.
